Event information

Two-day intensive workshop on the use of longsword and dussack based on the system of 16th century fencing master Joachim Meyer.

Workshop will be led by Petr Turya, founder of the Fencers guild - a premier European fencing organization based in Czechia.

Workshop will take place at the Mississauga Valley Gymnasium, which is located next to the Mississauga Valley Community Center on the weekend of September 9-10, 2023.

Required equipment

Participants are expected to bring their own fencing equipment - longsword or feder, fencing mask, fencing gloves, gorget. A fencing jacket is not required for the training sessions but bring one if you desire additional protection. Signum Corvus School of Arms will have a limited number of practice longsword trainers available for those interested. Please email us at info@signumcorvus.com if you would need to borrow one.

Wooden dussack trainers will be available to borrow to all participants at the workshop, please indicate in the registration form if you need one. 

What will the workshop cover

  • Original nomenclature/terminology of all fencing moves that belong to the Dussack/Langes Messer and the longsword tradition
  • Developmental exercises for coordination, reach, dexterity, and speed
  • Six master cuts and their applications
  • Principles of the three centers of gravity and six weaknesses
  • Movement, fencing steps and tactics
  • How to defend ourselves - to break the opponent's attacks
  • Training in pairs - building tactical distance, luring the opponent into traps
  • Developing tactics and working at full speed in order to achieve the principle of "Ganzen Leib" using the potential to act with the power of the whole body
  • Authentic lessons from selected original texts

About our instructor

Born  in 1979 and a Czech native, Petr Turya is a veteran martial arts  practitioner, beginning his journey into HEMA back in 1997. A translator and therapist,  in 2010 he founded the Fencers' Guild together with Martin Pulchart, a project devoted to the research, publishing and instruction of the art of combat using a great array of  weapons: longsword, dussack, rapier, dagger, pole weapons and unarmed  combat. Besides authoring the translation of historical sources which  the Fencers' Guild employs as a base for its studies, nowadays Petr is  still actively involved in combat practice.

Longsword and dussack sections will be combined throughout the two days. On the first day, we will open topics that we will develop and deepen the next day.

Minimum age of 16 is required to participate in the event.

Participants (or their guardians) will need to sign a liability waiver and photo release form to participate in the event.
