Art of Combat - 2025 Spring 1
Art of Joachim Meyer's longsword and dussack
Course Description
Joachim Meyer was 16th century German fencing master who has authored one of the most comprehensive European fencing treatises. He was the last major figure in the tradition of the German grand master Johannes Liechtenauer, and his work is one of the pivotal in the German tradition. In his treatise The art of Combat (Der Kunst des Fechtens) written shortly before his death in 1571 he significantly expanded his teachings from his previous works and offered series of lessons on number of weapons – longsword, dussack, rapier, dagger and polearms. This course will focus on the use of longsword and dussack as described by Joachim Meyer and we will look at fundamentals of the positions, cuts and techniques used with these weapons. This unique course is offered in collaboration with Fencer’s Guild – premier European martial arts school focusing on German fighting styles in the tradition of 16th century fencing guilds. Students are expected to subscribe to Fencer’s Guild online classes as the primary source of the course’s curriculum.
